What Should I Put in My CV If I Have No Experience?

Short answer: Replace the work experience section with evidence of capability: education with relevant coursework, practical skills such as Tally, Excel or languages, academic or personal projects, internships and training, and any volunteering or family business work. Lead with a short summary that states the role you want and what you bring to it.

The problem with a first CV is circular: you need experience to get a job and a job to get experience. The way out is to stop treating the CV as a record of employment and start treating it as evidence that you can do the work.

The sections that replace work experience

1. A summary line that names the role

Three lines at the top, rewritten for each application:

B.Com graduate with Tally certification, seeking an Accounts Assistant role in Guwahati. Comfortable with billing, ledger entries and Excel. Available to join immediately.

This does three things: states what you are applying for, names a concrete skill, and signals availability. Compare it with “Hardworking individual seeking a challenging opportunity in a reputed organisation”, which says nothing and appears on thousands of CVs.

2. Education, with the relevant parts pulled out

Your degree, institution and year. If particular subjects relate to the role, name them. A final-year project relevant to the job deserves a line of its own.

3. Skills — the section that does the heavy lifting

Be specific and be honest.

  • Software: Tally, MS Excel (VLOOKUP, pivot tables), MS Word, Google Sheets
  • Languages: Assamese, Hindi, English — say which you can write, not just speak
  • Practical: typing speed, two-wheeler licence, data entry accuracy

“Good communication skills” is worth almost nothing because everyone writes it. “Comfortable handling customer calls in Assamese, Hindi and English” is worth something because it is specific and checkable.

4. Projects

Academic projects, self-directed work, a survey you ran, a shop’s accounts you organised for practice. For each: what it was, what you did, what came out of it. Two lines each.

5. Training and certifications

Computer courses, Tally, spoken English, typing, workshops. Include the institute and year.

6. Volunteering and positions of responsibility

College committee roles, event organisation, NSS or NCC, community work. These demonstrate reliability and coordination — exactly what an employer is trying to assess when they cannot assess your work history.

7. Family business work

If you have genuinely helped — billing, stock, customers, records — include it. It is real, relevant work. Describe it factually and do not inflate it into a formal job title.

What not to do

Do not invent experience. It is verified at offer stage, and being caught costs you the role and the relationship with the consultancy.

Do not pad with irrelevance. Hobbies rarely add anything unless they demonstrate something relevant.

Do not use an elaborate template. Colours, graphics and photos make a CV harder to scan and can break automated parsing. A clean single-column layout is better — see our guide on ATS-friendly resumes.

Do not send it with a careless file name. Priya-Das-CV.pdf, not cv1.pdf.

A realistic structure

  1. Name and contact details — a phone you answer and an email you check
  2. Summary — three lines, tailored
  3. Education
  4. Skills
  5. Projects
  6. Training and certifications
  7. Volunteering or family business work
  8. Languages, and a line confirming availability

One page. Saved as PDF. Named properly.

Key takeaways

  • A fresher CV should be one page and lead with skills, not a hollow experience section.
  • Projects, internships, volunteering and family business work all count as evidence.
  • Never invent experience — it fails at document verification and ends the process.
  • Name the role you are applying for in your summary line; generic CVs get filtered out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I include a work experience section if I have none?

Not an empty one. Replace it with sections that show capability — Projects, Training and Certifications, Volunteering, or Positions of Responsibility. A CV with a thoughtfully filled Projects section reads far better than one with an "Experience" heading and nothing underneath it.

Does helping in a family business count as experience?

Yes, and freshers underuse it badly. If you handled billing, managed stock, dealt with customers or kept records, that is directly relevant to accounts, retail and back office roles. Describe it plainly — "Assisted in family retail business: daily billing, stock records and customer handling" — rather than dressing it up.

How long should a fresher CV be?

One page. A recruiter scanning applications gives each CV a short first look, and a two-page fresher CV usually signals padding rather than substance. If you cannot fill one page, tighten the content rather than increasing the font size.
