How to Stay Safe While Searching for Jobs

Job scams are a real problem in every city's job market, including Guwahati. Here's what to watch for.

Warning signs of a fake job offer

• An offer with no interview at all, or one that consists of a single unusually short chat.
• Requests for money — for "training kits," "registration," "processing fees," or "refundable security deposits" before you've even started work. Legitimate employers do not ask candidates to pay to be hired.
• Requests for your OTP — sent to your phone during a call or chat. No genuine recruiter needs an OTP from you; this is used to hijack accounts (banking, UPI, email).
• Requests for bank account details or card/UPI PIN before or during onboarding, outside of a normal, verified payroll setup process after joining.
• Unusually high pay for minimal work, especially for "work from home data entry" or "package handling" style roles advertised out of the blue.
• Communication only over WhatsApp/Telegram from a personal number, with no official company email domain, website, or verifiable office address.
• Appointment letters with spelling errors, generic logos, or no verifiable company registration details.

Before you accept any offer

• Verify the company independently — search their name, check for a real website and address, and see if other people have reported issues.
• Confirm the recruiter's identity and role at the company, not just at the agency (if one is involved).
• Never share your Aadhaar, PAN, bank details, or OTPs over chat with someone you haven't independently verified.
• Insist on an in-person or verified video interview before making any payment or sharing sensitive documents.
• If it feels rushed or pressured ("today only," "pay now or lose the offer"), slow down — legitimate hiring processes don't work that way.
